As usual there has been plenty of action in the cricket world recently with MRCC involved heavily with rep team honours, class performances allround, and the return from the rellie run of Guv.
Over the Xmas period our state reps all excelled, with everyone's favourite Akash Patel starring for the NT u15s with the ball securing a position in the team of the carnival. Akash has since returned and completely bamboozled RSL C grade bowling 7 overs into the wind, and not conceding a boundary of 7 overs , then spanking Feds with 5/18 in b grade...then playing his role in the recent A grade one day premiership rout. Don't you just love this bloke.
Jacques Vandernest was also in great touch for NT u19s and more than held his own with both bat and ball. A recent injury kept him from premiership glory last weekend but he will be back bigger and stronger and i predict will have a hugely successful finish to this season.
Our skipper, Blayne Cornford...what more can we say about this bloke. Carrying a injury into last weekends final, he rallied his troops and led classically from the front. Opening the batting, was there at the end of 45 overs, unconquered on 133. (more on this game later...but for great detail read the recent A grade update). Blayne was the Alices only rep in the NT senior side which was successful at the recent country championship contributing at a high level with the bat. Well done skip, you certainly make all at MRCC proud.
The social scene has been light on for formal events since Xmas but plenty of the lads have managed to bond with a few sessions after games at our home the Memo.
Ditchy has a few events organised shortly so watch this space.
Dont forget the raffles on each Fri night at the club...the same faces seem to be present each week...make an effort fellas..remember many hand make light work.
On the Fri 5th March we are creating a first for many years, by treating our great sponsors to lunch and an afternoon of fun. Life member Murph has worked a treat and has complied the largest sponsor list I can ever remember. We are certainly indebted to these hard working businesses and encourage you all to use their services at all times where possible. The exec committee, captains and life members are looking forward to this big event, hopefully giving something back to our sponsors.
The finals are just around the corner and all grades are gearing up for same. We will have a more in-depth look at our chances in all grades closer to the event.
Congratulations to all our recent Imparja Cup players...all five, Charlie, Macca, Lowey, Doug the slug and Dillon in the NT side all held their own with excellent performances in all games. Then to back up and dominate a GF the next day is an absolute credit to all five. Macca, Charlie and Lowey with the bat, Loweys 7/22 with the ball (must be a GF record), Dillons crucial 2 wickets when needed, and Dougs bowling and fielding plus Macca behind the stumps...sorry Aidy nearly forgot you...most inspirational. Well done all round.
So, happy cricketing to all

The MRCC "Christmas on the hill" was held at Traeger Park on Saturday night (19th Dec.), and once again, was a huge success.
This yearly tradition is fast becoming "THE" Christmas party to attend. With numbers up around 160 this year and more expectant mothers at the club, it's likely that the numbers will grow for next year. People started to arrive around 5ish to watch our A Grade get stuck into the Westies lads and the flood gates opened around 6ish when the other two grades secured victories in their respective matches. A good crowd of around 160 had gathered by 7:15 and not long after, Santa appeared from nowhere and caught a few overs of the match from the Grandstand before being noticed by the throng of children at the ground. He wandered down to greet the kids and made his way, pied piper style, to the northern hill to distribute gifts to all the kids. He waved goodbye, shouted a few ho ho ho's, and with that, he disappeared just as quickly, no doubt to attend various other christmas functions going on around the globe.
While this was happening the A grade continued to chase the target set by the opposition and the now well lubricated crowd, erupted when skipper, Cornford, bought up his 50. Jacques and Blayne put on a clinic of how to run between wickets, before both being dismissed just short of the tagret and the Big Mac waltzed out blocked one and then smashed a six to finish the game, much to the delight of the rowdy crowd on the hill.
A big thank you goes to everyone that turned up to take part in this night, especially the kids, who seem to enjoy every minute of it. Watching these kids run amok and keep themselves entertained while they wait for Santa, then accept their presents in a polite and orderly manner, then go and run amok again, is a highlight in the MRCC calender. The club is good hands at the moment and events like this only show that the future of the MRCC is very, very bright.
Thanks also to all the sponsors and their families for turning out, the club relies on your support and would not survive without you all. Remember to utilise these businesses when requiring anything done in their respective fields.
Fantastic to see a few life members in attendance, Terry Weeks, Craig Murphy, Bob Colbey and his wife Sue, it is always a pleasure to have your company at club functions and we hope to see more "lifers" at future events.
These things do not just happen, there are a number of people who pull together to get such a large event over the line and I am going to try and thank you all here and now, if I miss you, I am truly sorry and your efforts do not go unnoticed.
Annie Derham and her band of salad ladies for providing for us all and catering perfectly, there was very little left over and everyone got fed.
Chris Rudd for his now famous, spread sheet, which proved invaluable in keeping track of everything, and ordering the meat from Milner Meats.
Weeksy, Guv, Scotta and Cherie for their continuous support, advice and assistance in all areas.
Lester and Lyndsay for the bread, again, catered perfectly with just 2 loaves left over.
Deb "Jones" for the pre dinner platters of cheese and kabanos.
Quanni for his assistance in getting things up and running.
Santa and Karen Nicolai for ensuring all the kids got their presents.
The chefs on the night, who I am pretty sure were, Dusto, Gaz V, Patto and others, somebody has to cook for the masses and this is a huge job on the night that is well received by all.
"Tugga" who suffered some injury early on, but managed to break the pain barrier and provide hot food and cold drinks late into the night.
Craig and the crew at Mad Harry's, what can I say? A massive effort from you guys to help Santa keep the kids happy, a huge thank you to you all.
In closing, it was a great night, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Another three victories on the day with all teams performing well, adds to the enjoyment on the night. A safe and happy Xmas and new year to you all.
Well done goes to A Grade who took out the One-Day final on Sunday, special mention to Akash Patel and Doug McClure who both took part in the great win. Skipper Blayne Cornford was unbeaten on 133 and Daryl Lowe took 7/22. Rovers won by around 93 runs.
The under 18 Alice Springs team will venture off to Sydney for the national Twenty20 titles, Rovers are well represented by Akash Patel, Jaiden Harmen, Brad Duke & Josh Smith. Finlay Borgas from our seniors will also be playing and from A Grade Scott Allen will be coaching the boys. Best of luck for next week.

Heading into the one day final against Feds, the A grade side shaped up well. Having played cricket all week, Macca, Lowey, Charlie, Dillon and Dougie all fronted up for the decider at Albrecht Oval, a great effort considering the amount of cricket played during the week.
Blayne won the toss and elected to bat, with himself and Finlay starting proceedings. Fin was the first casualty in the 6th over when he was caught with the score on 39.Scott Allen joined Blayne in the middle and they quickly looked like posting another big partnership before Scott was fired out LBW for 12, 2/57. Lowey strolled out to face the music and a 50 run partnership ensued until Lowey mis-timed one and was caught at mid off for 17, 3/107 after 23. Macca joined Cornford, who was building toward a big score and they set about picking off the Feds attack with some big hitting and great running between wickets to collect singles at will, with Feds employing some “interesting” field placements. The Big Mac was finally bowled for a well compiled 39 in a 119 run stand with Blayne that saw BC bring up his ton and swing the game well in favour of the Memo lads. Nick Hasan jumped up the order as pinch hitter and was quickly back in the stands, being bowled first nut. Enter Charlie Dick, with the score on 226 and just 3 overs remaining, Charlie took a liking to the bowling and plundered 23 off not many balls faced. Huddle being the victim, with Charlie and Blayne helping themselves to 23 from his last over. The Memo-Rovers innings closed at a staggering 5/265 off 45 overs, scoring at 13 an over for the last 10 overs.
Blayne unbeaten on 133, with Macca and Charlie chiming in with scores of 39 and 23 respectively.
Feds began the chase with Wilson and Walsh at the crease. Some lusty hitting and poor bowling saw them race to 50 after just 8 overs! The bowling tightened up a bit but the fielding was average at best. A couple of dropped chances and a missed run-out by Rowey, saw Feds 104 without loss after 22 overs and the stage is set for a cracking finish worthy of a final, between the form sides of the season. It was Cornford who broke through to remove Walsh for 34 with the score on 104 and Clements joined Wilson and a partnership began to blossom until Lowe was unleashed into the attack. Wilson gone for a well made 59 and then Buckets, the second victim of the MacAdam/Lowe combination. Huddle came and went when Measures had him caught early by Charlie Dick, playing his signature shot. The score now 4/133 and the job ahead of the lads in red. Measures removed Harding LBW without any addition to the score and Darrell Lowe started his party tricks. He removed Clements, S Tait, Hill Prior and M Tait, finishing with the amazing figures of 7/22 off 7.4 overs. Feds looked like chasing the score with room to spare when 0/104, crumbling under the sublime off spin of Lowe, to finish all out 168, effectively losing 10/68 in just18 overs.
A game that was worthy of a final, a big total set by Memo-Rovers and a great start to the chase by Federals, but ultimately it was the boys from the MRCC that enjoyed the spoils of victory with a convincing win. Earning the first major silverware on offer by the ASCA for season 2009/10.
Stand out performances from Cornford 133* and Lowe 7/22 were a real highlight, as was the 104 run opening stand by Walsh and Wilson, for those that chose to venture down to Albrecht to catch the action.
After a week or so of rain, which I thankfully missed due to a week or so soaking up the rays in Bali, it was good to get back on the field again.
The toss was won again, thanks to a bit of assistance from the well watered grass, and we trotted out to have a bat. Lowey and Kev opened up, and after a torrid start (20 off the first 3 overs), settled down to build an opening partnership of 117, before Kev was bowled on 25. Lowey was joined by Nollsy, and some lusty hitting saw the run rate pick up quite quickly. Lowey fell for 82, to possibly the gayest shot I've seen him play, and was also caught by John "Butters" Gaynor, who had a shocker for the remainder of the day. Dillon joined Nollsy, and the two boys put on a display, putting on 111 runs in a little over 10 overs. Dillon finally falling with 3 balls to go in the innings for 58, leaving Kev packing the kit on 25. Patto had been dreading this outcome, and strode out to the non strikers end with 3 balls left. A quick single from Shannan saw Matt facing the last two balls of the innings. Unfortunately, he only saw one of them, and was bowled off his pads for a Golden, giving Kev a reprieve from the kit....
Nollsy finished unbeaten on 83, and we had an imposing total to defend once again - 4/274.
The bowling started tight, and after 5 overs Feds were 1/21, and we were looking for a new stump. (Thanks Dusto!) Dusto bowled out his 8 bagging 2/34, which could have been better if we held some chances. Lowey chimed in with 2, Jonesy with the usual 4 for not much, and Akash finally got one after being taken to by big Pietsch. Feds all out 145, and a semi early day again.
With one round to go, we are half a game clear on top of the ladder. A must win game this week against Westies to ensure we go straight through to the GF.
Back at home against Feds after last weeks washout, and the lads were keen to get back into the swing of it. Bluey called heads and down came tails so into bat we went.
After pestering me for the last fortnight, Life Members Weeks and C Murphy joined forces to open our account against a Feds side keen to put up a fight and try to secure second spot on the ladder. The partnership between the two "Lifers" was short lived when Murph was fired out LBW in the second over, 1/2. Returning from a 2 week hiatus, Ty Daniels needed some time in the middle but was denied the chance when he was trapped in front LBW and we were off to a shaky start, 2/23. Double ton maker Gaz Vanstone went out hoping to continue his form and watched the demise of Weeks at the other end when he was bowled for 15, 3/25. Gaz holed out next over and was back in the sheds for 0, 4/25. Rob Howson and myself tried to steady the ship until I offered an easy chance to Richard Black at point and it looked as if we might have an early afternoon, 5/33. S Murphy joined Rob, and Rob joined the rest of us on the sidelines, LBW victim number 3 for the day, 6/39. Mick Betteridge smashed a six off CD but was caught soon after for 7, 7/57. Yulara Murph blew an opportunity and took up a position in the shade beside his team mates which left Woodbury and Wilson at the crease, with the score on 8/60. Woodsy and Jake set about repairing the damage done and slowly built a solid partnership of 36, when Jake smashed one to shortish mid wicket and the chance was held, 9/96. Juddo and Woodsy took the score to 116 when Woodsy was LBW victim number 4 (unheard of in C grade) on the last ball of the 34th over and the collapse was complete. Our recent total of 3/330 a distant memory and some serious work to do to avoid defeat on our home deck.
Woodbury 23, Weeks 15 and Wilson 13 the only batsmen to break double figures and extras top scoring with 39!
I took the new ball and it was all happening in the first over, a couple of sharp chances dropped at first and second slip, then a wicket when I bowled young Nixon off his pads, and a very confident LBW shout turned down and it looked like it could be game on, 1/3. Big Mick not to be out done had Richard Black caught brilliantly by Weeks and Feds under a little bit of pressure at 2/3. Bluey Filmer didn't survive the next LBW shout from my bowling, then Weeks and Betteridge combined again, this time to run out young Gaynor and all of a sudden we had a real sniff with the lads from east 4/20. That soon became 5/28, Big Mick trapping Sam Day in front, who should have been out in the previous over when Jake Wilson dropped an absolute dolly at mid on! Duncan and Ericsson put together a stand of 31 until Weeks and Betteridge again joined forces and removed Ericsson with Mick accepting an easy chance, 6/59. The Yulara connection removed Duncan with Murphy accepting an edge off Woodbury's bowling, 7/61. CD holed out to Vanstone at deep mid on off Weeks and the rout was almost complete, 8/73. Quinn was caught out of his crease when Murph gave Weeks his third wicket with a quality stumping and Woodsy put Feds out of their misery when he bowled Edney for 0. Feds all out 79.
Weeks bowled beautifully to pick up 3/28, Mick and Woodsy 2/8 a piece and I grabbed 2/23, to completely decimate the Federals batting line up. A few chances going to ground but overall a decent display in the field to back up some excellent bowling, after an ordinary showing with the bat. Last minor round game next week against West at Larapinta, will see some changes due to unavailability and a return to a more "normal" batting line up after experimenting a bit this week. Let's try and get as many as we can out to training for the last week or two and continue our winning ways.
