President Finbar O'Loughlin Speaks  from Edition 1 - October  2003   Back to Top
Gday and welcome to the 2003/2004 season.

Initially a public thank you to those blokes who ran the club last year … Muzza, Hoss, Youngy, Captains Pyle, Ditch and Scotta and all those who helped with our fundraisers and along the way.

To our loyal and our new sponsors…. the BIGGEST thank you.  A small Club like ours turns over a disproportionate amount of money throughout the season and your generous support is greatly appreciated.  I look forward to this season’s President lunch with great “enthusiasm” … and plenty of berocca.

A recap on last season.  Our junior grades all had a great year and thanks to those who managed the teams, Phil Quabba, Rob Borgas, Brad Tanner & Peter Young.

No finals in the Under 11’s and 13’s however our Under 16 lads made the semi but weren’t successful.  Many of those blokes are now in our senior squad and will be breaking their way into the A grade from early on which is great for our future.

C Grade were also beaten in the semi final but Scotta Nicolai will ensure we get the trophy back this year!

B Grade had a battle all year with some great wins and some terrible losses.  Ditch finally seemed to be able to get some consistency from his young squad when the season came to an end.  No finals cricket but some great development in players.

After losing 8 blokes from the previous season’s Grand Final and written off at the start of the year, Pyle and the boys charged into the GF with their best win of the season. Unfortunately they followed it up with their worst game of the season.  That was last year and with roughly the same squad this year we’re very confident of success.

Our Premier trophy, The Derham Dredge Award presented to the Best Club Person was shared by Brad “Hoss” Tanner and Peter “Pie Chucker” Young. Youngy will be missed this year following his return to SA.

Two new awards were introduced last season. These are CLUB trophies and all results across all grades count. This recognises the inevitable moving between grades of players in a town our size and ensures every weekend’s effort is recognised.

In honour of a couple of our Life Members, the Bob Colbey Award recognises the player who scores the most runs for Rovers, and the Craig Murphy Award recognises the player who takes the most wickets for Rovers, note … for ROVERS - not for a particular grade.

I believe these awards are the most important “playing” awards in the club and add a new level of recognition we’ve missed. Great idea Muzz and co.

In finishing up, thanks again to our Sponsors and supporters, the captains will ensure you have plenty to cheer this season.

To the players, play in the right spirit and the right results will flow.  Get to training and use the newest and best nets in town. Get to the Memorial Club and enjoy the best club facilities in town with your teammates. Support your captains and recognise it’s a big job with plenty of off field jobs as well…. Help out where you can!

President Finbar O'Loughlin Speaks  from Edition 2 - December  2003   Back to Top
We’re now a couple of weeks from the Christmas break and Rovers continue to put some mixed performances in the books.
The Juniors have had some successes. Under 11’s and 13’s doing extremely well and the Under 16’s proving competitive. We are presently in “discussions” regarding playing an overage player, which stripped us of the points for 2 wins. Our lad claims he thought he was right (although he didn’t check) as the opposition had a lad he knows is 2 weeks older. Time will tell but a lesson learnt by all involved….

C grade are equal top having won their last three straight. The RSL game required the involvement of the Association to calculate the scores as it seems scoring is not a high priority for some .. it can’t be that hard surely! Anyway we got the points.Saturday’s game was however a belter with us keeping West to 151, 155, or 159 …depending on which part of their scorebook you took (another example!).   In an amazing effort a broken down Steve Trindle, with Squirt as runner, and “Big Al” Hall at the other end (who would have loved a runner), put on 52 for the last wicket stand to see us get over the line….you bloody beauty.

B grade continue to struggle putting it all together at the same time.  Milney couldn’t back up on last weeks 93 (Langer-esque) and the boys again collapsed for f-all. They have proven they are a better side than we’re seeing and I’m sure things will gel just around the corner. Once again it’s been difficult getting a settled side but some encouraging individual performances augur well for 2004. The beauty of this comp is you only need finish third to make the finals.. and then it’s just 2 wins to glory (and Mad Monday!).

And A grade…. Poor Matty Pyle is pulling his hair out trying to get some consistency and “team” into the boys. They’ve had a chat and it showed in Saturday night’s effort with the ball under lights but we still need to put on a more competitive target.  Welcome back to Ty Rayfield who made plenty in his first week in town (C Grade – 87*) and isn’t far off making them pay in the A’s (hopefully).  Great to see Nick “Whacko” Clapp get amongst them on Saturday with a well-fought 46.  Nathan “Bones” Johnson has been the find of the year with some fabulous bowling efforts in the past 2 weeks.

Socially we put on a barbecue under lights at Traeger on Saturday night. Good to see a few from B’s & C’s down to support the A’s.   The Sun FM Beach Party bbq was a success with by my counting 10 blokes coming down to give a hand…or were they just there for the wet t-shirt competition. Incredibly Big Al didn’t with the beach wimp award…obviously rigged.

We’ve been getting around 15 blokes back to the club on Saturday nights, which considering the number of underage kids we’ve got playing seniors, is a pretty good effort.  We’d love to see more of you of course as the more the merrier .. particularly if you win the “Mug”!

Mary’s Wednesday Evening Bowls has finished for the season and Rovers were a credible 12th, two clear of relegation.  Our opportunity to advance further up the ladder on finals night was nipped in the bud when the heavens opened up. Our boys were ready to play, with the whites on and all, but no joy. Congratulations to all who played. I’m sure we brought a new dimension to “Lawn Bowls”.

Best wishes to all players, supporters and your families for a Happy Christmas and let’s hope 2004 brings plenty of joy on and off the field.  Drive carefully, for those on the road, and for those in the pub – Don’t drink and drive…dial 131 008 and see if you get one of those unfriendly, no-idea of service, bitter old taxi drivers (yes…I have just had a bad experience!!).

President Finbar O'Loughlin Speaks  from Edition 3 - February 2004   Back to Top
Now getting down to the “business” end of the season … which seems an odd term as we do most “business” at the beginning.

Anyway.. our Junior grades continue to perform well. Under 11’s and 13’s still have huge numbers and hopefully this will be looked at by the Association next year so more kids can get a go.

Thankfully, Under 16’s retained their points from the two wins over Federals. They also had an ineligible player so it was deemed to be “all square”. The boys have just beaten Feds again on the weekend so are now 10 points clear in third and look ok for a finals spot.   Well done to Alistair Young for taking 5/11 and Matty Paterson-Nicolai for his 41 and a caught and bowled on his 13th birthday.

Brad “Hossa” Tanner has moved to Darwin with work and all his efforts across the club but in particular with these blokes is greatly appreciated… and missed.  I’m getting up earlier on a Saturday now than I do on a workday!!!

The senior year hasn’t been quite so good unfortunately, especially given the efforts put in by all Captains.  A Grade struck some bad luck thanks to some recent “localised” rain.  For those not in the know the sprinklers at Traeger Park came on three Saturday mornings in a row!  They played the first week as it was a day-night game and the track was drying out by 3.30. Unfortunately for us it was a minefield early but had dried out by the time the opposition batted – shades of 00/01 Grand Final when we arrived to a wet track day 2!

While the council argued over what was to blame (rain, very localised rain, vandalism, we don’t know), the problem continued and the next two weeks were unplayable costing us any chance of making up lost ground.  Whilst we needed results to go our way it would still be nice to be playing for something. As it stands, Wests were beaten that weekend and a win by us would have closed the gap dramatically.  Council has now scrapped the “faulty” controller, is purchasing a new one and will water manually until the end of the season. Thank you!

Milney’s B Grade boys have found the going very tough this year with 35 different blokes having played in this grade so far. We’ve had our chances to win but it seems we’ve taken “batting collapse” to a new level. With no hope of finals they are now in the middle of a game we’re every chance of winning. As the song says ….“Isn’t it ironic”.  Good to see Gav “The Voice” Flanagan back after time off with injury.

C Grade are certain finalists this year but remain one game behind RSL off top spot. They’re desperate to finish top and go straight through as anything can happen come finals time. Qualifying will become an issue as everyone wants to play finals, but there just isn’t room to reward everyone who has helped get them there. Again, 34 blokes have pulled on the whites in C grade this year and choosing 11 to play the finals will be emotionally hard.

The Association held a very successful fundraising evening with guest speaker Kerry O’Keeffe. Thanks to all from Rovers who attended and it was pleasing to see us with the biggest representation. I can assure you this was recognised by the ASCA Executive and appreciated.

We’ll have our own big fundraiser in the coming months so I’ll be looking for even a bit more support from players this time to put some money in our bank.

Good luck to all for the rest of the season.

President Finbar O'Loughlin Speaks  from End of Season 2003/04     Back to Top
Well .. that’s it for the year, unfortunately earlier than hoped!

Our A grade men had a disappointing year with only three wins. Whilst we were able to be both West and RSL throughout the season, any chance of claiming a final victory over Federals was lost due to “human error” and the Traeger Park sprinklers. Matthew Pyle has busted his guts all year to put a most competitive side on the pitch but a lack of depth has worked against him. The return of some quality players was offset by transfer of others inter- and intra-state and we just couldn’t take a trick. A decision to develop some younger players will pay dividends in the next year or two.

B Grade have suffered due to the lack of A grade depth however Glenn Milne and his side finished the season on a high with an OUTRIGHT win against the top side. An amazing game where everything just clicked. We knew the performances were “in them” but what a pity we couldn’t get it right earlier in the season. Still, it’s a great way to end this season and hopefully it will give the confidence to some blokes for next year.

C Grade finished unexpectedly short. After being a side to beat all year, we saved our worst form for the end and lost three on the trot. Beaten soundly in the semi-final any dreams of some joy for the club were gone. Scott Nicolai was rightly disappointed in our late loss of form but as they say “Cricket’s a funny game” .. just not meant to be that funny eh Scotta!

Under 16’s also made the semi final which was a great effort from a side with many of last year's under 13's.  Jakob Roth led his team with captain’s performances, and then spent most Saturday afternoons playing C then B and then inevitably promoted to A grade. Well done to all the lads - Jakob, Dylan, Jeremy, Adam, Tyrone, Joel, Matt, Eddie, Matt, Cameron, Mitch, Jack, Michael and Alastair. See you next year.

Presentation coming up so please look back later for trophy winners including the Derham Dredge for Best Club Person.

President Finbar O'Loughlin Speaks  from Edition 1 Season 2004/05     Back to Top
It’s a new season and I think we are ALL looking forward to it.
The issues of last season are behind us, some new on field recruits, some new off-field recruits .. it all feels very promising.

We have had our AGM which was the most productive I can recall. The minutes are up on the site thanks to Scotta .. have a look (
Other News) and see what you’re expected to do, or alternatively have a look and see where you can help!

Scotta has also put the trophy winners from the past season on the web. Congratulations again to Alan Hall, Garry Vanstone and Glenn Milne on winning our Club awards, and congratulations to all the individual trophy winners.

Again, congratulations to Terry Weeks. At last years Presentation day, the Club bestowed Life Membership to Weeksy, who has been involved with the club for over 20 years. Amongst his exploits, he has captained A grade and C Grade Premierships and made a recent much-welcomed comeback to playing. Weeksy has always been willing to generously sponsor the club and was welcomed to this elite group by attending Life Members Murph, Stevie and Colbs, in front of his wife Karen and children.

The season will start on October 2nd and we’ll be having our annual 1000 club Mega Prize Giveaway on that evening to kick off the social season. Tickets are now available .. ask me for your small allocation. This is always a great night and a much needed fundraiser for the Club.

The committee are working on some new merchandise including caps, stubby holders and “steppin’ out” shirts. These will be on the website when to hand.

Good luck to all players this season and see you at training, which HAS NOW COMMENCED Tuesday and Thursday nights!

Cheers

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

The 04/05 season is underway, with mixed results on the field but great results off.

Our depleted A grade met a full strength RSL at Albrecht oval on Saturday. A disappointing result with RSL making 282, including an unbeaten 134 to Cameron Robertson. We were all out for under 100 with new recruit Lowey being the pick of the batsmen.

We’ve lost a few blokes from last year, and a few out injured. Justin Dowson has just found out he has fused vertebrae in his back, apparently for many years. Too much running into blokes on that rugby field Juddo, try going around them next time!

Stats has just had an arthroscopy on his knee. Rehab going well with his own personal in-house trainer, Kylie, so we’re hopeful he might make it back before Christmas.

B grade had a better start. Milney’s mix of young and old got the points against RSL. Young Dwayne Jones top scored with the bat as we made 128. We then bowled them out for 115, Captain Milne leading the charge with 4/16 from his 8 overs. For the record I scored an unbeaten 27 batting at 11, a century nipped in the bud. I’m not making calls about going up the order next week however, as this is 6 runs more than my aggregate for last season. Stats has made the call I won’t make this many runs for the rest of the year so the bet is on. Wish me luck… and a carton from Peter!

Stubby holders have arrived. “The drinking club with a cricket problem” - $10 each, ask me when you see me next. Club shirts have been ordered and will hopefully be available before the end of this month. Pricing will be $55 for players and $65 for non-players (including ex-players). They are Australian made Gazman shirts in 100% cotton. We’ll see if we can get a picture up on the site for all to see.

Cheers

VALE DAVE DITCHAM

Our sympathy and thoughts to the Ditcham family, on the passing away of Dave last Thursday morning. To Marg, Shane, Mark and Steve, wives and grandkids, we feel for your sorrow in these sad times at the loss of a great bloke.

Both grades wore black armbands, and the Federals Club joined us at the B grade in a minute’s silence, a lovely tribute to the gregarious nature of Dave and the respect he held. Thanks Feds.

Unfortunately the inspiration to win didn’t reflect in the scorebooks, and both grades were soundly beaten. This is quite obviously not an ideal start to the season but we break now for the Masters Games and return on October 23 with all grades playing. A few new blokes will be right to start then. This will hopefully fill those couple of holes we have, which turn into craters without the depth.

Federals held their 40th birthday celebrations over the weekend with a very entertaining (and large!) Merv Hughes as guest of honour. A few of us attended Friday’s lunch, and left some time later. Saturday night dinner was more subdued and then our old boys flogged their old boys in a fun game of Super 8’s under lights at Traeger on Sunday night. Stevie Trindle taking blinders on the boundary, Murphy catching them one handed, Muzza and Rubbish belting them out of the park. Great fun and augurs well for the upcoming Masters, although I’m not sure how the kidneys will survive….

Mark Nash, now playing at home for Mt Compass, made his best ever on the weekend. 132 not out, belting ex Adelaide Crow Tony Modra to all parts of the ground. Well done Nashy, keep that up and we might fly you back to qualify.

Have a look at the Masters site over the next week for what promises to be some incredible efforts. Some of the Rovers Relics are in town already so it’s going be a looooong Games, and they haven’t even started!

Cheers

President Finbar O'Loughlin Speaks  from Edition 4 Season 2004/05     Back to Top
Well… I’m glad that’s over! As predicted, it was a looooong Masters Games, just ask Linx.

Those of us old enough to qualify for Rovers Relics started with a “bonding session” on Friday night at the Memo. We continued this on Saturday night at the Opening Ceremony, before finally playing our first game Sunday, although I don’t think that stopped us.

A win got us off to a good start and more beer was had! We lost a couple of close games, the pick of them being against RCC Life Member Brendan Blandford, who organised a team from the Ararat district. They made 196 off the 14 overs and our Relics finished on 195. Agonisingly close but great to watch.

Holby organised Player of the Day prizes, barbecue, drinks, shade .. you name it he’d done it.
Thanks to Shaun Frerichs for coming back from Charters Towers to Captain – Man of the Series without doubt. Plenty of funny moments on and off the field, which will only be funnier by the time next Games come around and we start telling the stories.

At the end of the week Rovers Relics had raised sufficient money to donate $100 to the McGuiness McDermott Foundation in South Australia, $500 to Club’s Smile for a Child in the NT and $500 to Rovers Cricket Club Juniors. And still there was plenty to go on the bar!

Relics didn’t get Gold unfortunately, but we did play off against Em Em Ef (McGuiness McDermott Foundation) for Bronze. For the second Games running, the sprinklers came on just long enough for the game to be called a draw and both sides won a medal. One gets the feeling this “Friendly” result will become tradition at the “Friendly Games”, so long as we can continue to find the right tap.

Bland’s boys were the best performed side all week, on and OFF the field. In a great final they beat a mob of too serious indoor cricketers from Qld to win Gold, much to the pleasure of most of the crowd. Well done Ararat – you are all honorary “Rovers” and welcome any time.

To real cricket, all grades played for the first time this season on Saturday.

C Grade took on RSL at Flynn and chased 216 runs. A great knock by Steve Ditcham saw us open the season with a WIN. He opened the innings and was still there at the end - 111 Not Out! Well done Ditch, a huge effort and especially after the week we’ve had. Gaz Vanstone, who by the way opened his Masters campaign with a “Golden”, also made a half century to Captain the first win of many we trust.

B Grade played West at Larapinta. With a young team we could only muster 90 with the bat. We had them 4/16 including a team hat-trick, but just couldn’t get the next wicket to keep things rolling. In the end they made the required runs 5 down. A disappointing game considering the position we were in, but hopefully a lesson.

And now the A Grade. After being 6/46 against West, our two gun imports from Ararat, Blambs and Trigger, saw us on to 121. 37 and 31 respectively gave the bowlers a target to bowl at. As said by Captain Pyle after the game “They showed us how to value your wicket”.

In a nail biting finish, we WON by a solitary run! Congratulations to big Wayne Partridge on his 4/19 off 9. He bowled sensationally. All now hope this is the win we needed and the season will continue in this successful manner. I’m not sure when I’ve seen Pyle happier!

Thanks to Holby & Muzza and all involved with the Relics, it was a great week. Thanks to Blambs and Trigger for filling in Saturday with broken bodies, and assisting with the win.

Next Club Social night will be the Beach Party on Saturday 6th November. I need blokes for the BBQ please. Then we’ve got a free “Night at the Races”, Friday 12/11 at the track.

Cheers (and please … No more beer!)

Results from our first Two day games.

A grade were walloped in our first innings. All out for 67 with the only positive being Holby’s 27 not out. Brem’s also got a few but for the rest it’s pretty embarrassing. Captain Pyle “shouldered arms” and the rot started there. RSL went on to make 230 odd and we made 150 odd in reply to lose outright. Some better batting second time around however – see Pyle’s report below.

We may have been sniggered at during the week but in the other game on Saturday Feds were all out for 33 and West made only 46. Let’s hope a few other clubs AND reporters hold their tongues next time!

B grade were chasing RSL 161 at Head St. We were 2/36 overnight and Mick Sheehan was a picture of concentration considering Leanne’s water had broken for their first child. The beautifully named Crystal Rose was born in between innings and Mick continued his concentration not getting out until the 46th over of the match. Congratulations Mick and Leanne on the safe arrival. We were eventually all out for 139 giving RSL first innings. We then cleaned them up when they wanted to bat again “for the points”.

C Grade were beaten by Feds the week before fairly easily. Saturday we played West at Flynn Drive. Life Member Murphy had a day out, making 118 not out in our chase of 196. We made the runs 2 down with Gaz helping Spud out with 67 of his own. Murph might be chasing the Bob Colbey Award this year if he keeps this up!
Three C grade matches this year and already 2 unbeaten centuries, what is Gaz feeding them?

Under 16’s were soundly beaten in a one day last week against West. We were short a couple of players which didn’t help and thanks to those Under 13’s who helped fill in. West made 144 and then ripped through our batting to clean up out 9 batsmen fairly easily. Jeremy Borgas continued to show his talent and his appreciation of the value of his wicket, again finishing not out.

In the first of their two day games last Saturday 6th Nov, we bowled RSL out for 91 and are 2/62 overnight. A win would be a great reward for the efforts put in by Coach Rob Borgas (father of Jeremy and Finley).

The Beach Party was Saturday night. Thanks to all who helped out cooking the bbq. Particular thanks to Jade for manning, or more correctly womaning, the till all night. We make a little bit of cash from this each year and thanks to the Memo Club for giving us the opportunity. A big night, and morning, was later had at Life Member Weeksy’s “mini Memo” to help celebrate Murph’s 100 before continuing on back to the Memo to see the Kosta fight. Sleep came some time after.

Congratulations to Life Member Blambs on making 100 down south. He was certainly in form during the Masters and has obviously continued this on. Well done Blanket!

Friday night is a “Night at the Races”. The Turf Club are holding a twilight meeting with racing starting about 4 pm. A free bus from the Memo will be available and we’ll have free entry tickets also. The club with the most people attending wins a free XXXX esky so let’s support this heavily. Bring your girlfriends, wives, lovers, ex’s, workmates .. they don’t have to be Rovers Cricket people, we just have to give them the ticket.

Saturday / Sunday game this weekend so good luck to all.

Cheers

STATS IS BACK – A DUCK TO A GALAH

Quick update mid-play.

A Grade are chasing plenty (300) against Feds. After some dismal first innings efforts the last couple of weeks, we are all hoping blokes will VALUE THEIR WICKETS. Nothing fancier than that .. just try and bat out the day.

B Grade are doing well with the young squad. Read Scotta’s report below but again, if the lads can hang around we’re a real chance. Spud Murphy’s work rosters have been sorted so he’s giving some maturity to the team and coming off his recent unbeaten century, anything could happen.

C Grade had a win on the weekend chasing 151. Gaz commented last game about being able to chase 150+ easily and stumble when chasing less. It happened again, making the required runs in 22 overs. Wonder what would have happened if it was 149 required? Well batted Holbs with 57 – the big man’s on fire this year.

Under 16’s finished off last weeks game with a resounding win. Congratulations lads!
They are well placed again this week and with the taste of winning fresh in their mouths we’re expecting another positive result. Rob will still appreciate a hand on Saturday mornings from anyone, helloooo – anyone?

U13’s and U11’s continue to enjoy the cricket. They don’t play for points but I was reliably informed by an Under 13 lad last week that “we thrashed them and won easy”. Good on him!

Friday night at the Races was a huge success. Over 200 people. Whilst Federals won the esky for most associated people (rigged Feddies show ?), we didn’t win the Dash for Gold and The Guvv was soundly beaten in the Fifth race taking my money with him, apparently all enjoyed the evening and it will be repeated next year.

As for Stats and the galah. Well .. coming back from a knee operation he played in the C’s last week. He was dropped on a golden and went on to make a duck This week he was pretty scratchy early on, giving a chance in his second over but hung around to make 30 not out. In one of the more amazing things I’ve seen, he smacked one around to square and hit a galah clean out of the air! Poor little bugger looked like he might pull through (the galah, not Stats) but it was obviously hit with too much “power” and he wont play again.

Adelaide Test this week and I’m looking forward to catching up with some Rovers blokes, Nash, Hatfield, Thommo, Youngy, Hasan, etc - even Trigger from the newly adopted Ararat Avengers is coming. I can feel my liver aching already.

New shirts have ARRIVED and look great. We now have shirts, caps and stubby holders as requested by you blokes, so make sure you buy because we have to pay for them.

Cheers

Happy Christmas and a better New Year!

2004 is almost over and from an on-field perspective it couldn’t come quick enough.

A Grade got off to a blinder on Sunday and were giving Feds a scare thanks to Clappy’s opening. He’s turning into a real all-rounder now that he’s finally been able to give the keeping gloves up. Wickets, catches, runouts and runs .. look out Andrew Symonds.

Unfortunately we still have a poor attitude to batting and again collapsed. It’s getting bloody frustrating to see a good side on paper getting flogged but the last few weeks have shown glimmers of improvement and if it all comes together in one game .. look out.

Our B grade side has suffered this season with player availability and took the ground a couple of weeks ago with this year’s three C Grade centurions, Ditchy, Murph and Stats. Big things were expected and we weren’t disappointed. Sorry, that’s right .. we WERE disappointed. 2 Golden ducks and a Bronze, I’ll let you guess who lasted longest.

A better performance on the weekend pushing top side Feds right to the line so it all looks good for the later half of the year.

A week earlier Stats made 141 not out and took 2 wickets in the C’s. The occasion got to him and that night he asked Kylie to become his wife. I’m led to believe she readily accepted the offer. Congratulations to Kylie and Stats … but having a fiance has done nothing for his batting.

C Grade have been our only shining light this year. Gaz has a mixture of blokes to pick from each week and is trying to give everyone a go. They finally batted first last week, so I’m guessing he won his first toss for the year. After putting on 234 thanks to Bob Colby, who looks fitter every year and Weeksy who IS fitter, Feds made the runs with some dubious decisions leaving a sour taste.

Under 16’s are showing some real promise under coach Rob Borgas. They have really become a competitive unit and have also got some points on the board. Great to see Jeremy Borgas playing in the seniors and taking a wicket in his first over in A grade.

This weekend is the last round for 2004 and we’ll finish up with a Christmas party at Steve and Leanne Ditcham’s. Let Nathalie know your kids names and ages and there’ll be something from Santa for them. (
see the social pages)

For those travelling over the festive season, be careful. Better to arrive late than in an ambulance. Wishing you all have a great Christmas and all the best for a spectacular 2005.

GETTING BETTER!

The last round of cricket was played on a typical Alice Springs summer weekend – Bloody HOT! 42 on Saturday and a horrible windy 39 on Sunday.

A Grade played on Sunday at Albrecht again. Against West we put on 146 (Louis 34) but they ended up making them fairly comfortably.

B Grade played at Larapinta and made 196. Thanks to some big hitting at the end of their innings, mainly off me, West made 202 in reply.

Both games are a huge improvement on where we were even a few weeks ago. If we can keep this going it is only a matter of time before it all comes together.

Saturday night we had our Rovers Christmas Party at Steve & Leanne Ditcham’s this year. A great night with plenty of blokes from B & C grade in attendance (A’s playing on the Sunday – but a couple made it). Thanks to all who helped in some way, especially Craig and Robyn Lambley of MAD HARRY’S who donated all the presents for Santa, and of course Santa himself who arrived with lights and sirens blazing in the fire truck.

Christmas break is upon us and we start back 8 January. Enjoy the festive season and drive carefully.

Cheers

ROVERS HAVEN’T LOST A GAME THIS YEAR!

In the absence of Pyle, who’s photographing the Deaf Olympics in Melbourne (Why do they get their own games Youngy? I want a “Big Unco Redheads” Games!), Clappy led A grade to a victory over RSL in a nailbiter under lights at Traeger.

With a mixed up squad due to unavailability we made 173 with plenty of blokes getting a start and some end of innings big hitting by Tank Lynch.

Good tight bowling followed and to the relief of most of the crowd we won by a run!

B Grade thumped RSL at Head St. We were 6/220 (Bosio 61, Holby 74) and kept them to 8/165 (Scotta 3/24).

A great start to 2005 and here’s hoping we can keep it up.

Congratulations to Jenny and John Paul who get married this Saturday. They’ve knocked the stuffing out of our now victorious teams by getting married during cricket season but I’m confident we’ve turned the corner and results will continue to flow.

President Finbar O'Loughlin Speaks  from Edition 10 Season 2004/05      Back to Top

Only one shall remain …..

This is the last week of the minor round and, for those of you who have been following Memo Rovers this year, you won’t be shocked when I say only one team has made the finals.
Our C grade will play West this week with the winner finishing top and earning a free Grand Final spot. Loser plays off on 12 March. Good luck to Gaz and the boys and  hopefully some joy come 6pm on the 19th.
The rest of the club is unfortunately, but understandably, looking forward to the end of the season. A and B Grade play Federals in one day games.
Feds A’s guaranteed themselves top spot a few weeks ago so this game will have no bearing on positions and it looks like their B’s can’t make top, so same in that game.
Accordingly, captains have been told to have some fun and finish the year in good spirits. Batting and bowling could show anything this week.
Under 16’s have tried valiantly all year under the guidance of Rob Borgas. They have shown their lack of experience a couple of times but when you consider all but one are under 15 and two regulars are under 13, it is understandable. We’ve got a good bunch of keen juniors who should make a great side in a couple of years.
Imparja Cup on the weekend which gets bigger every year. If only we can get it played at a sensible time (not 2 weeks before our finals, and I’m sure many of the visitors interstate preparations),  I’m sure it would receive greater enthusiasm from locals however there was a good crowd at Sunday’s final.
Presentation will be Saturday night after the games. It’s a “White Night”, which means come down after the game in your whites or be fined. An extra fine will be levied on those who do a “Nashy” – go home, shower and pull on the extra set of clean whites!

See you at Sporties Saturday night!
